Séminaire technique sur La sécurité sociale et les problèmes de santé psychosociale

28-29 octobre 2010 | RomeItalie

The ISSA European Network will organize a Technical Seminar on social security and psychosocial health problems in Rome, Italy, on 28-29 October 2010. Psychosocial health problems, including stress, are one of the main causes of absenteeism and disability in Europe today, and this is occurring despite various stress management and individual support initiatives. It is estimated that 1 in 4 workers in Europe suffer from stress and that stress accounts for over 50 per cent of absenteeism in companies.

The World Health Organization estimates that by 2020 depression will become the second most important cause of disability in the world. These developments have a serious impact on social security schemes in Europe. Mental health is the number one reason for disability in a number of European countries, and health care, cash sickness and occupational disease compensation expenditures due to psychosocial health problems have been rising. Unemployment often contributes to or aggravates psychosocial health problems, posing specifically challenges for employability and reintegration.

Tackling the multidimensional risk factors of psychosocial health problems requires innovative and integrated approaches. In this context, the seminar of the European Network will discuss recent measures, challenges and good practices in social security related to prevention of psychosocial health problems among workers and analyze the respective roles and responsibilities of various social security schemes in ensuring that psychosocial health problems do not lead to long-term inactivity and disability. While the particularities of various social security schemes will be explored, the potential for improved collaboration and partnerships between various actors in early intervention and reintegration will also be highlighted.

The discussions will include topical issues such as:

Managing workers’ mental health problems:

  • How are different social security schemes tackling the issue of workers’ mental health problems at the workplace, and what are the challenges that workers’ psychosocial problems pose in terms of employability?

Prevention of workers’ psychosocial health problems:

  • What are the workplace risk factors for workers’ mental health and the role of the enterprise (e.g., in health promotion) at the company level?
  • What is the cumulative impact of risk factors inside and outside the workplace on workers’ psychosocial health and the role of various social security bodies in preventive actions?

Reintegration of workers with mental health problems:

  • What are the good practices for positive and early intervention and reintegration of workers who have experienced psychosocial health problems?
  • What is the role of different social security administrations as well as the potential for improved sharing and collaboration in order to enhance current practices in occupational reintegration?

The event is organized by the ISSA European Network and hosted by the National Employment Accident Insurance Institute of Italy.

Participation is open to ISSA members registered in the ISSA European Network.
