Atypical Employment European Analysis Of Scope, Dynamics and Social Security

The aim of this paper is to shed light on the grey areas in atypical jobs and attendant labour and social security safeguards. Atypical employment relationships are defined as part-time jobs, marginal employment, short-term contracts and (recent) self-employment. We begin by examining the nature, scope and spread of atypical employment over time in six countries (Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, Italy, Denmark and Poland). Our next step is to draw on panel analyses to outline the dynamics at play in atypical employment relationships (length and frequency of status changes) and describe the bridge function (transitions from atypical to regular jobs, i.e. upward mobility). We conclude by comparing the labour and social security framework conditions across countries.
