The International Training Centre of the International Labour Organization (ITC-ILO) organized the first ever ISSA E-learning Diploma training courses, between 1 June and 10 July. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the planned residential courses could not take place and all the courses were turned into virtual learning experiences.
125 participants from 14 countries and 29 different social security institutions participated in this E-learning adventure, which lasted six weeks and ended with the submission of their individual assignments.
What did the participants think of this learning journey?
Rebecca Mendy, Fund Manager for Contributions at the Gambian Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation, is very pleased to have participated in the course on the ISSA Guidelines on Contribution Collection and Compliance: “The course was very valuable and had a direct positive impact on my work. For instance, I attended a live meeting where we discussed extensively on building a new system for capturing contributions paid and that same day I could use what I had learned at work.”
Dragomir Draganov is the Director of the Analysis, Planning and Projections Directorate at the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) in Bulgaria. He completed the Diploma training course on the ISSA-ILO Guidelines on Actuarial Work for Social Security: “The course quality exceeded my expectations. I really liked its design, training methods and the opportunities to apply what I learned in real contexts. I appreciated the fact that the assignments were carefully elaborated, and I had to mobilise all my knowledge and skills to complete them with the required quality.”
Some participants expected that they would mainly be listening to lectures and prepare some assignments. However, they realized that the courses were organized in a very interactive way. Participants communicated online with their tutors and other course-mates in online meetings, and quizzes, technical forums and virtual cafés were all part of the training journey. The participants built a sense of community and were inspired by this virtual international exchange of ideas and practices. In this way, the first ISSA E-learning Diploma training courses became a wonderful learning experience.
Pablo Souto, one of the trainers of the diploma training course on the ISSA Guidelines on Good Governance, recommends the ISSA E-learning experience to all social security professionals: “Seeing how ISSA guidelines come to life with actual examples, lessons learned and discussion among participants is a great professional experience. Signing up for the training course will take you further in your professional career and expand your knowledge and skills in the social protection landscape.”
In addition to the E-learning Diploma training courses in English organized by the ITC-ILO, the ISSA’s other training partners, the Muhanna Foundation and EN3S, are now providing E-learning courses in Arabic and French respectively.
