Technical Seminar on Proactive and preventive approaches in social security

29-31 août 2012 | EzulwiniEswatini

A Technical Seminar on Proactive and preventive approaches in social security will be held in Ezulwini, Swaziland, 29 - 31 August 2012. The Seminar is organized by the ISSA Liaison Office for Southern Africa and hosted by the Swaziland National Provident Fund.

The traditional objective of social security systems to protect populations in the case of the occurrence of defined risks has been expanded in recent years to include proactive measures. By tackling major risk factors through prevention and early intervention, these measures are destined to reduce the need for social security benefits, promote employment and facilitate re-integration. This requires social security institutions to build capacities to anticipate evolving risks and calls for improved coordination and cooperation between different social security schemes and branches. In fact, among the various elements to be taken into account in developing an effective integrated prevention approach are:

  • Reducing work accidents and occupational diseases by means of measures such as regulation, enforcement and guidance;
  • Promoting a prevention culture by raising awareness involving all relevant actors and building partnerships;
  • Promoting health and healthy lifestyles at work;
  • Promoting and supporting employability and activity, through early intervention and return to work measures.

This Technical Seminar will provide an important platform for social  security institutions in Southern Africa to share information on  proactive and preventive measures adopted or being considered by their respective social security systems. Both branch-specific and integrated  solutions will be analysed with particular attention to good practices.

The Technical Seminar is open to ISSA members from the region and invited persons only.
