This first meeting of the ISSA Working Group on Migrant Workers in Eurasia reviewed key challenges for the social protection of migrant workers in the context of labour mobility in the Eurasia region as well as international normative and policy guidance on migration governance and exchanged experiences and views on policy challenges articulated by senior officials of Azerbaijan, Moldova, Kazakhstan, and Russia – including Mr. Yuri Voronin, Deputy Minister of Health and Social Protection of the latter; and heard policy and practice models of transnational and regional cooperation on ensuring and extending social security coverage to migrants in the MERCOSUR regional integration and the Ibero-American contexts, and concept and practice of Mutual Benefit Societies to complement social protection for vulnerable groups of population, including migrant workers, in particular.
