New brochures on explosion safety of bulk material plants

The ISSA Sections on Prevention in the Chemical Industry and on Machine and System Safety have published two new brochures (modules) on the explosion safety of bulk material plants.

Module “raw material reception"

In the process step raw material reception, flammable, dust-explosive products are accepted as loose bulk material or packed. It is assumed that the bulk material does not contain flammable solvents and that there are no flammable gases and vapours to be considered in this area.

The module consists of:

  • Raw material reception
  • Storage of packaged products
  • Emptying of containers
  • Loose bulk material reception
  • Conveying bulk goods for storage

Module “Storage"

In the process step "storage", flammable and dust-explosive bulk materials are stored in halls, bunkers and containers. Silos made of metals, concrete, plastics or flexible fabrics are also used. If nothing to the contrary is noted, it is assumed that the bulk material is free of flammable solvents and that the environment of the product is free of flammable gases and vapours (see module: safety characteristics).

The module consists of:

  • Filling of halls, bunkers, containers or silos with bulk materials.
  • Ventilation and deaeration via filters
  • Storage in halls, bunkers, containers or silos
  • Measuring process data (e.g. filling level, temperature)
  • Discharging bulk goods

English versions are summaries of the full German version. Translations into additional languages are being prepared.

A series of other publications on explosion protection have been produced by the International Section of the ISSA on Prevention in the Chemical Industry and the International Section of the ISSA on Machine and System Safety.
